Responsibilities of School Doctors in Care for Children with Developmental Disorders in Croatia

Background and aim: In context of preventive activities set in Program of health care for school children and youth, responsibility of school doctor is care for children with developmental disorders. The aim of this paper was to evaluate type and frequency of developmental disorders in children aged 6-7 years. Subjects and Methods Data were obtained from medical records of children examined in school health service before entering elementary school, in Croatia. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results The analysis included data of 11190 children. Because of health related issue, delay of school enrollment was indicated for 4.4% of children. Developmental disorders and health problems were found in 6.9% of children. Dyslalia was found in 28% children, dyslexia and dysgraphia in 16.7%, hyperactivity in 13%, behavioral disorders in 18.5%, emotional disorders in 9% and epilepsy in 7%. Appropriate forms of education were determined considering type of difficulties. Regular program with individual approach was set for 7.8% children, customized program for 55.9%, special program for 20.1% and other measures in 16.6%. Conclusion Systematic examination before school enrollment is important in order to identify children with developmental disorders, because of necessity to determine appropriate form of education. School doctor is a professional with knowledge and competences to assess child’s ability. School doctor as a member of the school committee, together with teacher, pedagogue, speech therapist and psychologist, is involved in decisions making process about appropriate form of education.
