Men’s Health in School and Adolescent Health Service in Croatia

Background and aim The aim of the study was to assess prevalence of male reproductive system disorders and/or diseases revealed in school and adolescent medicine health service in Croatia. Subjects and methods Data were obtained in school year 2015/16 from routine preventive examination reports for elementary school - first, fifth and eighth graders, secondary school first graders and first year higher education or university students. Results Analysis of the data revealed disorders and/or disease of male reproductive system in 18.3% (N=24635) elementary school first graders, 11.3% (N=17455) fifth, 8.1% (N=19775) eight graders, 7.2% (N=15164) first year secondary school students and 6.6% (N=6746) first year higher education or university students. Among elementary school first and fifth graders, the most prevalent diagnosis was phimosis and adhesions (14.5% and 6.5%, respectively). Among eight graders of elementary, first grader of secondary school and higher education or university students, the most prevalent diagnosis was varicocele (2.6%, 3.6% and 3.8%, respectively). In year 2015, 111 boys aged 10-14 years, 192 young men aged 15-19 years and 57 young men aged 20-25 years with diagnosis varicocele were treated in hospital. Conclusion Monitoring of growth and development, detection of male reproductive system disorders and/or diseases trough preventive measures provided by school and adolescent medicine service, enable well-timed and appropriate intervention for preservation of reproductive health.
