Supramolecular assembly in metal containing architectures - structural and thermal characterization

Controlling properties of crystalline solids by controlling the way in which molecular building blocks are assembled in a supramolecular structure is still one of the main challenges in the crystal engineering. Therefore, understanding the way in which metal-containing systems that rely on covalent and non-covalent interactions assemble in the solid state would be of tremendous help in the design of materials with a variety of potential applications. Among various non-covalent interactions, halogen and hydrogen bonds are currently receiving considerable attention in the field of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. To contribute to better understanding of the role of the two interactions in the metal-containing supramolecular assemblies here we present synthesis and characterization of architectures of a series of metal complexes that rely on those interactions. We employed a series of substituted pyrazines as bi-functional ligands (equipped with the functionalities) to direct the supramolecular assembly. The structural studies were combined with spectroscopic and thermal analysis in order to correlate solid-state structure and physical properties. By means of thermal analysis we were able to study structural changes of supramolecular structures during thermal treatment as well as thermal stabilities connected with strength of non-covalent interactions. Structural, thermal and spectroscopic data were complemented by structural data retrieved from the CSD.
