Induced smectic phase in binary mixture of twist- bend nematogens

The recent discovery of twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) has sparked a great interest in the scientific community due to both, the fundamental novelty and its potential for innovative applications. In this contribution, we report on phase behavior of the binary mixtures composed of dimers BB and CBI shown in Figure 1. Investigation of mesomorphic properties of both pure compounds revealed Iso- N-NTB phase sequence. Although nematic constituents have no smectic phase, the mixtures enriched with BB show intercalated smectic phase. The mixtures enriched with CBI exhibit the NTB phase at room temperature. The results of combined microscopy, DSC and spectroscopy study will be discussed.
