Binding of Metal Ions by Monodisperse Polystyrene Latex Particles
The binding of simple metal ions by monodisperse polystyrene latex particles was studied by the radiometric method. The binding experiments were performed with 57^CO, 65^Zn, 154^Eu, 137^s and 181^I radionuclides, and the latex particle size ranged from 119 nm to 728 nm. Bivalent (Co^2+, Zn^2+) and trivalent (Eu^3+) cations were found to be adsorbed in amounts comparable in the order of magnitude with the ion surface densities determined by the electropboretic method, but consistently lower values were obtained for metal ion binding. No binding was observed with monovalent cations (Cs^š) and anions (I^-). The inflection points in the adsorption isotherms are explained by a stepwise occupation of the surface resulting in the first step from a possible interaction with the carboxyl groups and in the second with the sulfate and sulfonate groups. The maximum surface covering below 1% could be estimated if taking into account the ionic radii. Chemical, solvation and coulombic contributions to metal ion adsorption are discussed.
