Bioefects and Safety of Diagnostic Ultrasound
The passage of ultrasound waves through human tissue disturbs the cells in its path and causes the mechanical and thermal effects. According to the ISO 14971, an international standard addressing the application of risk management to medical devices, hazard is defind as a possible source of harm and risk is defined as the probability of occurrence of harm and its severity. Ultrasound hazards arise from the heating caused by the absorption of the sound energy in tissue. Mechanical effects arise predominantly from the presence of gas and radiation pressure. Currently, according to human epidemiological studies, there is no real cause for concern about safety for techniques in common clinical use. Caution must be exercised in the use of pulsed Doppler in obstetrics and the use of gas-bubble contrast agents.
