Crossing over to the future: Interdisciplinarity in research and higher education
This plenary lecture set the stage for the conference held in Stockholm in May 2017, "Crossing over to the future: Interdisciplinarity in research and higher education". The distinction between empirical and orientational knowledge (Jurgen Mittelstrass) introduces the transformation of knowledge then mirrored in the works of other thinkers. When viewing the Grand Challenges, a distinction can be drawn between those having a history of collaboration across disciplines and domains, and those which do not. It is shown that the fundamental issues can be addressed from a theoretical perspective, but also from views that develop from concrete experiences and endeavors. The fundamental questions addressed are: how to bridge gaps between disciplines and research domains?, implications for setting research agendas?, and implications for the global dimension?. Special reference is also made to reforming university programs in the sense of fundamental issues such as: how do we disseminate 'knowledges' of different kinds for obtaining future societal and natural sustainability? Also, questions such as how do we do disseminate 'knowledges' within academia but also to the general public, and can 'interdisciplinarity' be the trigger for changing mindsets in a constantly changing societal and natural environment.
