Air Impedance and Thiele-Small Parameters in an Electrodynamic Loudspeaker
We have investigated whether and how an electrodynamic loudspeaker is sensibly influenced by the air impedance. To understand the role of the air impedance, the loudspeaker was operated in the atmosphere of air, in the pressure range from 0.01 to 1 bar. The resonant frequency of the high-frequency loudspeaker measured in air increased with pressure, and was independent of the membrane’s vibration amplitude. This sounds for the application of the Euler equation, and the corresponding viscous stiffness of air is added to the mechanical stiffness evaluated from the static load- displacement measurements. The enhanced vibrating mass and stiffness were introduced in the corrected Thiele-Small parameters.
