New face of pharmaceutical sciences - From research to clinical application

The Pharmaceutical Sciences represent an evolving and highly dynamic field. Recently two overreaching trends in pharmaceutical industry show an increased effort to develop biologic-based drugs and creating more specific or targeted drug delivery approaches. Therefore new tools, new skills, new knowledge and additional expertise of practitioners are needed since the mission of pharmacy practice is to contribute to health improvement and to help patients with health problems to make the best use of medicines. The problem that might arise here is how to transfer new developments and knowledge about new science-based pharmaceuticals to clinical settings and pharmacy practice. The Pharmaceutical Sciences combined a broad range of scientific disciplines from basic to clinical research, drug discovery, drug design, drug delivery, drug action, drug analysis, pharmacoeconomics, and regulatory affairs. They are further subdivided into several specialties, i.e., pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical toxicology, pharmacogenomics, ... Thus pharmaceutical research can be generally divided into basic, translational and clinical research. Basic research is the type that is not always practical but often leads to great discoveries while applied research refines these discoveries into useful products. This statement implies that basic science does not have a direct impact on human health and disease or patient outcome but offers the tools that eventually lead to advances in understanding and treating disease states. Application of basic-science knowledge leads to better clinical practice through drug development, improved screening techniques, and better diagnostic tests. While basic and clinical research have both been clearly defined over the years, a third domain of translational research that offers a bridge between basic research and clinical applications.has been established by Koshland’s statement in 1993. Translational research is the application of discoveries made in the laboratory to the development of novel drugs, vaccines, and diagnostic tools. Translation is the process of turning observations in the laboratory and clinic into interventions that improve the health of individuals and the public—from diagnostics and therapeutics to medical procedures and behavioral changes. Under such a definition, basic scientific inquiry might result from basic research, applied research, or clinical research designs. This year we celebrate 135th Anniversary of the continuous pharmacy education at the University of Zagreb as well as 135 Year o the Pharmaceutical chemistry/Medicinal chemistry teaching at the same University. Pharmaceutical /Medicinal chemistry is in the core of the origin of pharmaceutical practice and it is continuously present in its advancement, so pharmaceutical care together with drug discovery is interwoven naturally.
