MORAL ENHANCEMENT: NEUROSCIENCE OR (NEURO)SCIENCE FICTION
For centuries philosophers have discussed morality and ways of making moral judgments. It is unclear to what extent our opinions, reactions and moral decisions rely on rational discourse, shaped by education and social factors, or whether they are predetermined by the properties of a biological substrate - the brain. (Cognitive) neuroscience and related disciplines are trying to answer what happens at the biological level while making value based decisions and which biological preconditions are essential for optimal cognitive and emotional functioning as well as for sound moral judgment. Understanding the neurobiology opens up the space for action and brain enhancement. Without going into the discourse of whether moral enhancement is a justified and desirable goal, the talk will address to what extent it is actually possible, and how it is associated with mood and cognitive enhancements.
