Hydrogeological setting of the Island of Mljet and its impact on the organization of the water supply
This chapter is a part of an excursion guidebook. The review contains information on the Island of Mljet, an Adriatic karst island in southern Dalmatia region: lithological and structural-tectonic settings, hydrogeological characteristics and functions of the terrain and the overview of the most prominent localities in the sense of hydrogeology and water supply organization. The characteristic feature of the island, not present at any other Adriatic karst island, is the appearance of brackish lakes called the blatinas. These lakes function as estavelles which are connected to the sea by karst conduits. Such a specific form was possible to arise due to a specific relation of (hydro)geological and topographic features on the Island of Mljet. Seawater percentage in blatinas is quite low (maximum 10%) so they are used for water supply after treatment in the reverse osmosis desalination plants.
