Graecorum imperio subiecti: Aspects of Byzantine sovereignty in early medieval Dalmatia
A part of the Byzantine Empire between the 6th and late 12th centuries, Dalmatia conserved a certain amount of Byzantine influence in various aspects, which is to be expected, but nonetheless this was not systematically or thoroughly examined in scholarly literature. A number of written sources: documentary, narrative and literary texts, official documents, epigraphy, sigillography, etc. point to traces of Byzantine presence and their longue durée in the region, representing a sort of Adriobyzantism or Latin Byzantinism, an intellectual product of a marginally Byzantine cultural zone. At the same time, they enable better understanding of the scope and nature of the Byzantine presence in early medieval Dalmatia. Some of them will be examined here, further developing the arguments on the penetration of Byzantine culture as well as on the contacts between the Adriatic basin and the imperial metropolis.
