Sound recognition in CI Children: Three Months Post Switch on
Cochlar implants enable hearing in early post-operative period. Such hearing is a base for development of listening skills. Since the aim of cochlear implantation is listening and speech development, assessments usually deal with speech perception (speech audiograms, MTP, closed set and open set lists of words and sentences). The aim of this study is to analyze sound perception in first three months after the speech processor switch on. Thirty children implanted in June 2001. participate in international Child study EARS (Evaluation of Auditory Responses to Speech), whose purpose is evaluation of speech perception and communication development in CI children. From the test battery, only the tests dealing with sound perception are evaluated in this study. All the children received MED-EL C40+ implant and Tempo+speech processor. Sound perception is assessed preoperatively, at first fitting, one month and three months post switch on. Results are compared in regard to duration of preoperative rehabilitation and age at implantation.
