Music school out-of-frame: an interdisciplinary context and projects in Croatian schools

Music schools in Croatia are facing big challenges. In the past twenty years Croatian educational system was under different reforms that have led to the modernization of compulsory schools and finding ways to meet the students’ needs. These changes have been affected by scientific researches, creative approaches, innovations, professional proposals and numerous examples of Croatian and international models of good practice, but all this was not largely implemented in the art education. Although we can find successful music schools in Croatia, this can be attributed primarily to quality teachers and gifted children who have achieved great results in Croatian and European instrumental or vocal competitions. But, the real challenge is noticed in the modernization of the music school with the intention to become closer to each child, not only the gifted one, in which he/she will experience music and express himself/herself through music. This includes questioning methods, forms, strategies and the introduction of interdisciplinary and project activities, with the aim of improving the teaching process. It will be directly reflected in the increasing number of children who want to enrol in music school because it offers specific ways of individual and group musicianship, and participation in cultural and artistic projects in which students collaborate, create and become culturally competent. The fact is that music school should assume different position compared to the one it has now, open itself to the community, creating the European future. Our intention is to explain how the music school is conceived in Croatia. Furthermore, we will examine: (1) whether and how the music schools in Istria (Croatia) modernize the program in the primary music school ; (2) if an interdisciplinary approach is proposed ; (3) whether the connection with other music schools in the national and regional cultural life is effectuated. Based on a interviews with school principals and teachers, studying documents and exploring the video clips, a non-standard programmes and projects from three Istrian music schools will be processed, analysed and described.
