The Challenge of Telepathology

Telepathology as a discipline of telemedicine, recently became a rapidly expanding field also in Europe. On the traces of decades of sporadic experience( first in the United states and then in some european countries)and fostered by the rapidly developing technical possibilities in communication and computers, telepathology is becoming a widely used tool.It s application seems to be of best value in countries with relatively few pathologists or with special geographical or organisational circumstances such as few reference centres or long distances between peripheral and university hospitals.Finland with its long experience in telepathology is an example of this.In Croatia the recent war and occupation of large parts of territory by Serbian troops(1991-95)resulting in severe communication problems, stimulated introduction of telepathology systems.Specially challenging was the need of introducing systems witch could be based on old-fashioned infrastructure and used by routine pathologists. This resulted in introduction and continuos development of image database and telepathology programs ISSA and PHAROS.These systems enabled still( "frozen")image transmission with parallel voice or textual communication. In this paper the development of tools for "scanning" of still images, one of the major problems in still image telepathology is highlighted.
