Bioethical challenges of biotechnological enhancements' in neuroprosthetics achievements from the antropological and moral perspective
Enormous progress in the field of Biotechnology and Neurotechnology has brought the innovation of new technologies, by which the old idea of the fusion between human and artificial becomes a reality. This is particularly evident in development of medical biotechnology and the rapidly expanding of neuroprosthetics. Even if it may give the impression that it does not raise any ethical issues ; however, this conclusion does not take into consideration the complete and integrated anthropological and bioethical picture of the moral implications that are associated with neuroprosthetics. Although the neuroprosthetics primary goal is to therapeutically restore the lost functionality, in some temptational cases its consequences might be enhancing, creating substantial changes to human being, providing a capabilities that go even beyond the human specie, that could lead to “super-human” performance or even to achieve a so called 'technological immortality'. With its eugenic aspirations, it can easily trespass the borders of the basic human being concept, altering it (by the rise of technological modification as a result of desired expectation to overpass the existential determinations and body inflictions, in order to become programmed, alternated and perfected being). Therefore, this topic is going to focus on a few questions: What are the main biotechnological achievements on the medical field? Is neuroprosthetic human enhancement an effort towards human perfectibility? Does the relation between humans and technology change with the implementation of neuroprosthetics? Can it be achieved preserving its original human nature? What are the further implications? Eugenic tendencies of contemporary and future biotechnological enhancements' and their applications are requiring conscientization of the bioethical responses and moral limitations, especially if they are threatening to our human patrimony.
