Relationships of subsurface chlorophyll maximum to diatoms and other microphytoplankton in the southern Adriatic Sea
Seven transect cruises were conducted in the southern Adriatic Sea, with the objective of determining microphytoplankton (cells longer than 20 um) populations connected to the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer. SCM in the southern Adriatic was found in a layer between 50 - 75 m. It was located well below the depth of the maximum temperature and salinity gradient, and was associated with the nutricline. SCM is located at the lowest depth where available light (1%) makes it possible for phototrophic populations to capture nutrients derived from subeuphotic depths. The CM in the southern Adriatic had a numerical dominance of diatoms. the most abundant diatom species belonged to the genera Chaetoceros, Nitzschia and Pseudo-nitzschia. The bloom-type diatom community in the SCM suggested that a high nutrient environmant in the SCM supported the growth of more eutrophic species.
