Development of Residual Forces in Bored Piles
Numerical soil-pile interaction analysis was carried out to explain unexpected distributions of axial force along two cast in place reinforced concrete piles tested under static loads. Axial forces were determined from measurements of axial deformations taken at intervals of one meter along the pile shaft during load tests. A kinematic hardening soil model was used for the numerical analysis. Soil stiffness at very small strains and shear strength were deduced from standard field tests. The analysis reveals that the distribution of axial force can be explained by assuming the development of residual forces along the pile prior to load tests. The development of residual forces is assumed to be the consequence of lowering the water table. Parametric studies show that the lowering of a few meters is necessary for the development of appropriate residual forces.
