Dietary fats and tissue mineral concentration in the early phase of liver regeneration

Introduction: Liver regeneration is highly controled process of proliferation both parenchimal and nonparenchimal liver cells. It appears as response to injuries of the liver tissue, such as partial hepatectomy. Zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron are essential oligoelements. They play important roles in various biological processes, including lipid metabolism. We have examined the influence of olive oil and corn oil enriched diets on zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations in the early period of liver regeneration. Materials and methods: Male Balb/C mice from our breeding colony, 2-3 months old, were divided in three groups with 5-8 animals per group. Mice were fed diets enriched with corn oil or olive oil during 3 weeks (5% addition to standard pellet, w/w), with control group on standard pellet diet. Animals were one-third partially hepatectomised under aether anaesthesia; 1 and 2 days latter they were sacrificed. Tissues were removed, washed in saline solution, dried and exposed to the microwave digestion. Minerals were determined by ion coupled plasma spectrometry. Results: First two days after partial hepatectomy zinc was increased in all three groups compared to controls, respectively. Calcium concentration was increased first day in mice fed standard pellet diet compared to controls, respectively. Finally, iron concentration was increased first two days after operation in mice fed olive oil diet. Magnesium concentration remains unchanged during the early period of liver regeneration. Conclusions: In corn oil polyunsaturated linoleic acid prevails. Olive oil have high content of monounsaturated oleic acid. Olive oil and corn oil diets induce changes of the mineral concentration during extensive, early phase of liver regeneration. Zinc concentration increased in all three groups and delays to return to original value. Only olive oil diet induced changes in the iron concentration. It seems that olive oil and corn oil diet prevent changes in the calcium concentration during the early phase of liver regeneration.
