Sexual Disorder
The World Health Organization (2002) defines sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality ; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. Sexuality is a central aspect of being human, influenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic, political, cultural, ethical, legal, historical, religious and spiritual factors (WHO, 2006). Person-centred diagnostic criteria for sexual health include state of health, factors which influence sexual health, experience and expectations on sexual health and dyadic relationship. Sexual dysfunctions are a heterogeneous group of disorders that are typically characterized by clinically significant disturbance in person’s ability to respond sexually or to experience sexual pleasure. Sexual dysfunctions are often accompanied by interpersonal conflict between sexual partners, and sometimes very strong feelings are associated with these problems. Global surveys estimate that 9–29% of men and 16–43% of women suffer from distressing sexual problems. So, it is very important to promote sexual health and educate professionals and patients, using person-centred principles of care.
