Sažetak
Experimental characterization of fatigue material behaviour and determination of corresponding material parameters, while most accurate, also comes at a price due to long duration of experiments as well as high equipment and personnel costs. Since it is beneficial to be able to estimate fatigue lives in advance of experimental testing, a number of methods for estimation of fatigue parameters from monotonic properties were developed and proposed in literature. Overview of these methods in Basan et al. (2010), showed that different monotonic properties are used in different methods for estimation of strain-life fatigue parameters. Further study of original papers in which methods were proposed revealed that no systematic determination of individual monotonic properties’ relevance and contribution to methods’ accuracy were performed. In this paper, detailed statistical analysis was performed in order to establish whether and to what extent particular monotonic property is relevant for the estimation of strain-life fatigue parameters of steels. Already Bäumel and Seeger (1990) identified that considering material groups separately improves estimations. Basan et al. (2010) showed that there is statistically significant difference among fatigue strain-life parameters and behaviour of unalloyed, low-alloy and high-alloy steels. Thus, in this work, analyses were performed separately on unalloyed, low-alloy and high-alloy steels using 116 experimental datasets. It is shown that only certain monotonic properties are suitable for estimation purposes, while for a number of monotonic properties no such conclusion can be given. Obtained results further indicate that different monotonic properties are statistically significant for estimation of fatigue parameters of unalloyed, low- and high-alloy steel subgroups. Specific monotonic properties relevant for estimation of individual fatigue parameters are determined for each steel subgroup and can be used for improving the accuracy of existing, or development of new estimation methods such as the ones based on artificial neural networks.
