Harmonic Balance Developments in OpenFOAM

The method solves incompressible turbu- lent periodic flows, while special attention is given to development for turbomachin- ery applications. It is implemented and tested in foam-extend, a community-driven fork of the open source software Open- FOAM. The Harmonic Balance model is used for accurate and efficient simulations of incompressible turbulent periodic flows, and therefore validated using ERCOFTAC centrifugal pump case and KP505 propeller test case. Results are presented and com- pared with conventional transient simula- tions. Furthermore, a novel approach to solving naval hydrodynamics problems us- ing Harmonic Balance is presented on two test cases: regular wave propagation and wave diffraction on ship hull.
