The Croatian Language and the Minority Education: Situation in Slovakia and Austria

The concept of the mother tongue presents one of the burning issues in minority communities, especially in the context of education systems, and two autochthonous Croatian communities in Slovakia and Austria are no exception. This paper focuses on the analysis of qualitative data obtained through interviews that were gathered over the course of a larger project on the language and identity of the Croatian minority in Slovakia and Austria. After a short overview of the sociolinguistic situation in the communities in question, the current status of Croatian in the education system will be examined, with special attention given to the interaction of the (Burgenland) Croatian standard and local varieties.
