Shear effect on the limit bearing capacity of masonry walls
Firstly, constitutive model for masonry that include only the effect of normal stresses on the failure of masonry (Model 1) is presented. Then, more reliable constitutive model for masonry that include the effect of normal and shear stresses on the failure of masonry (Model 2) is presented. Both numerical models are applied in numerical analysis of two–storey unreinforced and confined masonry walls exposed to horizontal forces until failure, and their results were compared. It was concluded that Model 1, which does not include the shear effect on the failure of masonry, can give unreasonably significantly higher ultimate bearing capacity and smaller displacements of masonry walls. Shear effect on the bearing capacity of masonry walls is significantly dependent on the wall type (unreinforced, confined), the quality of masonry and high - length ratio of wall.
