Possibility of application of the ash from biomass on acid and nutrient-deficient agricultural soils

Joining to EU Croatia, based on the Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (ERS) was overtaken obligation to increase national usage of ERS by 2020 to 20% in gross consumption, and accordingly 2013 was adopted National action plan for ERS. Within the scope of that plan, Croatia financially supports construction of electric/heating power plants which use agro/forestry biomass, as one of principal and important ERSs. Annually in Croatia has been running several plants based on biomass, which generate ash material as an important by-product that has to be managed (used) properly. By the chemical properties ash from biomass is extremely alkaline (pH>12) and rich by phyto-nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg) as well. Great portion of agricultural land areas in Croatia, i.e. globally is quite acidic (pH<6) and deficient by certain nutrients. So the assumption is that ash from biomass could be very successfully used for the purpose of soil chemical conditioning in respect to soil pH reaction and soil fertility. For that purpose the study was conducted in controlled greenhouse conditions with corn (Zea mays L.) as a test plant in which were certain amounts of the soil (from Ap soil layer) mixed with the ash generated from forestry biomass (wood chips) to be detected vegetative parameters and chemical changes in the soil. The study was reviled that ash addition to the soil was significantly impacted chemical pedovariables (pH, macro-/micro-elements content), mineral composition of the corn root/shoot system and all vegetative parameters of interest.
