Influence of carbon based nanofilers in oil based nanofluids on tribology and thermal conductivity
Nanofluids are the two-phase systems in which solid nanoparticles are dispersed in a very small amount in conventional base fluid, mostly water and oils but also other common solvents. Well-designed and carefully optimized, nanofluids show a number of advantages over conventional suspensions. In this paper stable nanofluids of carbon nanotubes and graphene flakes based on mineral and synthetic oils were prepared by adding polymer surfactants. Wear reduction of nanofluids was examined by four-ball wear test, and depending on type of fillers has shown low to moderate wear reduction. Thermal conductivity of nanofluids was investigated using transient hot wire method. Only the nanofluids with highest amounts of filler added (1 wt. %) have high increase in thermal conductivity ranging from 6 to 12 %. Wettability of nanofluids on metal surfaces was investigated using contact angle measurements. Most of nanofluids independent of the amount of filler have lower contact angles compared to neat oils.
