An Ecumenist or a Relapsed Heretic: Ivan Supek's Historico-Literary Portrayal of Marko Antun de Dominis
The paper examines novelistic reflections of Stephen Jay Greenblatt’s New Historicism in the European context of Ivan Supek’s Heretik. Integrating the events from the 1620s and the Roman Castel Sant’Angelo, the ones from Split and the Episcopalian English court of James I Stuart, and those from the 1920s, Supek’s Heretik (1968) thematizes Reformation by its descriptions of “heresy” and martyrdom of the 17th-century Split archbishop Marko Antun de Dominis and his confrontation with the Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Vicenzo Barberini) and the incipiently hesitant official inquisitor, Cardinal Desiderio Scaglia, with a delicately interwoven leitmotif of espionage and subversion, as a Jesuit nun and Dominis’ confidante, symbolically named “Fides, ” turns out to be Scaglia’s concubine. Heretik, a noted oeuvre among the 20-odd novels written by the Croatian academician Ivan Supek, represents an upgrade to the 19th- and the 20th-century philosophical attitudes that formed them, especially to a Hegelian relation between an individual and the State and a relation between and individual and a community, as well as to a realization that the world’s history epitomizes a gradual development of spiritual consciousness with regard to liberty and, thereby, implies an alterable developmental degree of the entire humankind of a specific period. Closer to a Millian comprehension of values of an individual and his or her stimuli than to a Feuerbachian persistence on a “spiritual material” or to a Comtean “recognitional union, ” Supek is literally mostly following the steps of Bertrand Russell by his disarmament advocacy, humanism, and pacifism.
