The Measurement of Weld Surface Geometry
The weld surface geometry greatly influences the fatigue life of welded joints. Expressions given in relevant literature used for the calculation of fatigue stress concentration factors, usually take into account five parame- ters of weld surface geometry, i.e., the thickness of the welded material, weld toe radius, weld toe angle, weld face reinforcement and weld width. Thus, to determine the fatigue stress concentration factor for selected welds, it is necessary to measure the weld surface geometry. There are several methods of measuring it. A non-contact 3D measurement method based on structured light projection and relevant measurement software is presented. The adopted approach is discussed as measurements are significantly influenced by the operator, consequently also the resulting stress concentration factors.
