Stratico and Tartini – Student and Master. Giuseppe Michele Stratico's Music System in Comparison with Tartini's Music Theory
Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), as the head of the famous ‘School of Nations’, considered his pupil Giuseppe Michele Stratico (1728-1783) to possess the entire soul of his school (possiede l’anima intiera della mia scuola). Both Tartini and Stratico were violinists, composers and music theorists. Stratico followed Tartini’s violinistic and compositional practice, and in this presentation I will take into consideration similarities and differences between the master and the student in the field of music theory. Their relation can be regarded from two different perspectives – Stratico as a critic of Tartini’s theory, and Tartini as a starting point for development of Stratico’s music system. As for the first perspective, Stratico’s critique is expressed in the short text Lo spirito Tartiniano, which can be observed in the context of numerous and various reviews of Tartini’s works Trattato di musica (1754) and De’ principj dell’armonia musicale contenuta nel diatonico genere (1767). The second perspective offers possibilities to establish which standpoints of Tartini’s theory Stratico considered important and why in his work Trattato di musica. Although Stratico dealt with a similar set of problems as Tartini, he offered different solutions, as I will demonstrate by comparing a selection of issues regarding both theorists.
