Groundwater - the unseen resource and subsurface quality
Natural groundwater quality (not affected by human activities) is controlled primarily by the chemical properties of rainwater in combination with minerals and biological activity in the soil and aquifers. Like rainwater, natural water in the water table aquifer is moderately acidic with a pH of about 5.50. It may contains a lower concentration of dissolved constituents. Because of the relatively dilute concentrations of dissolved constituents, additional inputs such as fertilizers applied to the land, could significantly change the chemical properties of the water: As water moves from the water table aquifer to the confined aquifer, it dissolves various minerals and its chemistry changes. Confined groundwater is less acidic and has a greater amount of dissolved constituents than does water in the water table aquifer. It is very important to know implications of findings of for example nitrate and pesticides on management of water quality. In this paper are presented some possibilities for remediation of subsurface water.
