Determination of correlations between electrical conductivity, dry matter, total polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity of marigold extracts (Calendula officinalis)

Marigold has been used in folk medicine for centuries. Traditionally, marigold has been used to treat conjunctivitis, blepharitis, eczema, gastritis, minor burns including sunburns, warts, and minor injuries such as sprains and wounds. Today, marigold is being investigated for its anti-cancer properties. In this research, physical properties (dry matter content and electrical conductivity of the extracts) and chemical properties (total polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity) of marigold extracts were correlated. The plant extracts were prepared by conventional aqueous extraction using a high solid-to-liquid ratio (50 w/w) and by stirring (500 rpm) at three different temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C, 80 °C) for 90 minutes. Simple regression models showed strong positive correlations between electrical conductivity, dry matter, total polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity at the temperatures of 40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C.
