University of Zagreb While bioethics discourse from the 70-ties onwards was infatuated with this issues of physician-patient relationship, patient’s rights and autonomy, advancement of medical technology and the patient’s position in this situation people in the area of public health researched new kind of issues. In 2004 Sir Michael Marmont published one of the most influential books in the area of public health „ The Status Syndrome: How our Social Standing Affects Our Health and Longevity“. The Maromont states the following in his book „Where you stand in the social hierarchy is intimately related to your chances of getting ill, and your length of life. And the differences between top and bottom are getting bigger and have been for a generation.“Henk ten Have in his lecture is also aware of the turn that bioethics needs to make in its agenda. He advocated the following “we need a broad approach to ethical issues related to healthcare and health technologies – an approach that goes beyond the individual perspective, and takes into consideration the social and environmental context. “ Ten Have goes on saying that inequality is recognized as a major social, political and economic problem and gives an ample examples from health and social fields.
