Effect of iron ions on fluorescent compounds
This paper investigate the influence of metal ions on fluorescent compounds in solution and treated cotton material in For this purpose, two types of fluorescent compounds - fluorescent whitening agents and UV absorber - are chosen, from the group of stilbene and biphenyl derivatives, while the UV absorber of the stilbene structure. Fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) are a special kind of dye that contains a fluorescent system at the site of the chromophore. Biphenyl type have better stability to light and for this reason are recommended for use in conditions of higher exposure of materials to external influences. UV absorbers are organic or inorganic colorless compounds with high absorption in the range of 280 to 360 nm. As a metal ion representative iron was used in a concentration range of 0.2 to 1.0 ppm. The influence of iron ions in these concentrations on the properties of fluorescent compounds was investigated in a solution without and with textile material. The presence of iron ions in the bath causes a lower degree of whiteness than when the material was previously treated with the same concentration of iron ion. Metal ions in a single-use process create a complex with molecules of stilbene FWA and reduce its absorption potential.
