Analysis of Artistic Gymnastics Terminology: Floor Exercise Elements

Terminology of any sport is characterized by a set of attributes. This set of attributes distinguishes, to a certain extent, the terminology of the sport in question from terminology of any other sport – for example, the terminology of one sport might be less specific than the terminology of another sport. The aim of this research will be to analyse a set of terms used in the English language to denote floor exercise elements both in women’s and in men’s artistic gymnastics. Two samples of terms, those referring to women’s floor exercise elements and those referring to men’s floor exercise elements, will be selected from the official 2013 Code of Points – Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique, 2013) and 2013-2016 Code of Points – Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique, 2013), respectively. The set of floor exercise elements terms in women’s gymnastics will be divided into four groups – terms denoting leaps, jumps and hops ; terms denoting turns ; terms denoting hand support elements ; and terms denoting saltos/somersaults (forward, sideward and backward). The set of floor exercise elements terms in men’s artistic gymnastics will be divided into two groups – terms that denote non-acrobatic and terms that denote acrobatic elements. Each grouping of terms will be done according to the grouping of elements made in the corresponding Code of Points. The terms in each sample will be analysed as to their structure. Differences between the groups of terms within each sample will then be sought. Further, semantic differences between some key terms epitomizing the specificity of movements, for example, semantic differences between jump and hop ; turn and twist on the one hand, and salto/somersault on the other ; as well as the difference between salto/somersault and handspring will be explained. Data referring to the structure of selected terms, together with data pointing to the presence or absence of differences between the groups comprising each sample will help to draw conclusions that will constitute the basis for any future research into other areas, e.g. elements on uneven and parallel bars, of artistic gymnastics terminology.
