A Hydraulic Component Scalability Tool Based on Willans Line Method Towards the Optimal Design of Hybrid Hydraulic Vehicles

Over the last two decades, road vehicles are increasingly being equipped with hybrid powertrains in order to improve their fuel economy, and, consequently, to facilitate notable reductions in greenhouse gases emissions. Due to the fact that hybrid powertrains consist of two or more different energy sources, many variants of these powertrains are present in contemporary commercial vehicles ; from electrical hybrid (HEV) configurations which are mostly present in passenger vehicles, to hydraulic-type hybrid vehicles (HHV) which are mostly used for waste disposal and delivery trucks. The typically elaborate s tructure of hybrid powertrains provides many design opportunities in terms of powertrain structure selection, components sizing and energy management control, which all have influence on the powertrain cost and efficiency. Having this in mind, this paper proposes a novel approach to hydraulic hybrid drive component sizing methodology based on the Willans Line method. This method, which has been previously successfully applied to scaling of the internal combustion engine and electrical machines models, is adopted in this paper to develop a scalable hydraulic unit (pump) mathematical model. The paper firstly describes the unit model with model parameters taken from catalog data, followed by the approximation based on Willans Line method, which is explained and modified to suit the hydraulic unit model definition. Then the final scalable hydraulic unit model is verified against catalog data for different unit sizes and the method approximation error is analyzed in detail.
