Some Recent Results of Automated Drilling and Torsional Vibration Active Damping R&D Aimed at Mature Drilling Systems Retrofitting

A notable portion of contemporary oil drilling rigs are still equipped with mature drilling equipment such as traditional speed-controlled drives being used without regard for drill-string compliance-related stick-slip effect, which shortens the useful life of the tool (drill-bit) and other drill-string drive mechanical components. Moreover, the drill-string hoist draw-works control of the drilling process is still being based on manually-operated mechanical brake actuators for drill-string and tool weight-on-bit (WoB) and rate-of-penetration (RoP) control. Thus, in order to meet increasingly stringent requirements on the drilling system performance, such mature drilling systems need to be retrofitted with advanced active damping control systems within the drill-string drive, as well as automated WoB/RoP control systems. To this end, this paper presents an overview of such drilling automation systems, with particular emphasis on the retrofitting designs currently being researched, developed and fielded by the Croatian oil drilling-related businesses.
