Translation of Metaphorical Terms in the Field of Economics from English into Croatian
The paper starts from a corpus of selected loan translations found in online business glossaries, abstracts of scientific papers in the field of economy and publications translated from English into Croatian to test the degree of their comprehensibility as cases argued to have a potential to slowly find their way into the Croatian system and thus enhance its expressive repertoire and enrich its conceptual structure while avoiding unnecessary terminological inconsistencies and placing minimum burden on a native speaker in terms of meaning recognition. The abovementioned potential is argued to lie in (near) universal, as well as culturally-specific metaphorical and metonymic mappings, which are suggested by the authors as potential motivating factors for linguistic borrowing, based on the analyses of online surveys testing the comprehensibility of the target loan translations, conducted on Croatian speakers from different walks of life.
