Thirthy-five years experience with the measles vaccine containing Edmonston-Zagreb strain: Vaccine strain analysis, safety and immunogenicity
In Croatia, vaccine based on Edmonston-Zagreb strain, licensed in 1967, has been used routinely in children as a monovalent measles vaccine since 1967, as bivalent combined measles-rubella vaccine since 1972 and as measles-mumps vaccine since 1974. MMR vaccine containing Edmonston-Zagreb strain, licensed in 1974, has been used routinely since 1992. Although effective, well-tolerated and reliable measles vaccine has been available for over 30 years and batch-to-batch consistency in the manufacturing process could be demonstrated, it has historically been difficult to arrive at a single definition of vaccine quality. The potential problems that could affect vaccine quality including the regulatory environment (variable global vaccination practice in development of clinical trial protocols, upgraded standards of vaccine quality) will be presented. In conclusion, there is no evidence through many years of production that an alteration in the Edmonston-Zagreb strain occurred. The quality of the strain remained consistent since its introduction. This can explain its continued safety, efficacy, effectiveness and lack of epidemics in Croatia and elsewhere used.
