On Non-finite Clauses in Academic English and Their Equivalents in Croatian

Non-finite clauses are dependent clauses with a verb phrase not marked for tense or mood (Biber et al., 1999). In the written academic register, they are commonly used as complement clauses in the post-predicate position. Non- finite clauses have a wide range of syntactic and semantic roles that may be open to multiple interpretations in particular instances. This paper focuses on non-finite ing-clauses in English and the corresponding Croatian equivalents in the field of information sciences. In particular, it rests on the analysis of official international guidelines for library associations and institutions in English and their published Croatian translations. The article, first, concentrates on the analysis of the salient syntactic roles of -ing participle clauses within major categories of dependent clauses (Quirk et al., 1985) in English texts. Particular emphasis is given to the study of adverbial ing-clauses due to their diverse semantic roles. This is followed by an examination of their Croatian translation equivalents. Despite a small-scale corpus based on the specific genre and a single academic discipline, the paper attempts to yield insight into the use of ing-clauses in the English academic register and their Croatian equivalents. The results of the study aim to provide a helpful input for further research of the above-discussed structures.
