The 22nd International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering CHISA 2016 held in Prague, the Czech Republic from 27 to 31 August 2016 confirmed its credentials as one of the leading venues for academic and industrial communities, covering a wide range of chemical engineering topics and offering many interdisciplinary links to modern process industries. The programme included standard general sessions and many specialised symposia (see www.chisa.cz/2016 or the general website www.chisa.cz). Participants were engaged in the intensive exchange of research results, discussions, and new joint project building. The word CHISA has its origins in the Czech acronym for "Chemical Engineering, Chemical Equipment Design and Automation" and under this name, the series has been launched. The first international CHISA Congress series started in 1962 in Brno, Czech Republic, continued in Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad), and then moved to Prague in 1972 to be held there ever since. It is worth mentioning that its logo has been used for the national event as early as in 1956. At first the international events had been taking place every three years, but from 1996 they have become biennial. Over the last two decades, these European Congresses have gradually gained world recognition, as they usually gather around 1000 participants from 60 countries. This is the excellent result, particularly with regard to the fact that many similar and rivalling events occur in the world every year. For certainty, it is influenced due to the more than half-century long tradition. It might be pointed out that the National Conferences CHISA take place annually between international Congresses. (Therefore, the CHISA 2016 has been – in fact – the 63rd event in the series.) Naturally, authors have always been interested in publishing their contributions. The publication of full texts in printed version surpasses the organiser's resources, but they are collected (even though not peer-reviewed) and distributed to participants on CD-ROMs. Even the printing of the Book of Abstracts in five volumes became unfeasible since 2010, when their total volume reached no less than 2500 pages. For the first time in 2014, as well as for the last CHISA 2016, the organizers decided to approach three impacted journals that cover chemical engineering and related topics with a proposal to publish special issues containing selected CHISA papers, under the condition, of course, that these manuscripts undergo the standard peer-reviewing procedure. The journals that welcomed publication were as follows: Chemical Engineering and Technology (Wiley), Chemical & Biochemical Engineering Quarterly (Croatian Society of Chemical Engineering) and Journal of Food Engineering (Elsevier). As a result, this issue of CABEQ brings seven papers submitted shortly after the CHISA 2016 Congress. All manuscripts have been peer-reviewed. On behalf of the CHISA organisers, the editors of this special issue would like to thank CABEQ for publishing the selected CHISA papers. We are sure that after the next CHISA event in 2018, authors will submit more papers than is necessary for one special issue of CABEQ. At this occasion, we would like to draw readers' attention to the forthcoming 23rd Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering, which is already scheduled for 25 – 29 August 2018 in Prague. Website of the CHISA 2018 (www.chisa.cz/2018) will be open in August 2017, at the latest. It would be greatly appreciated if readers could disseminate this information among their colleagues.
