Behavioural spillover potential of participation in energy production
The majority of energy production in the current system is operating on a centralized model of production which is treating consumers as passive recipients of energy. This is changing since more distributed energy resources are being introduced into the system. Evidence of positive behavioural spillover is varied but recent literature suggests that it is more likely to occur if the initial request is for a more demanding action (Truelove et al., 2014). Instead of looking at the initial behavior on a scale of difficulty/demand, in this paper I will explore if participating in energy production has an effect on energy consumption and positive or negative spillover effects on other domains of (energy-related) behaviour. The aim is to discuss different modes of participation in energy production (from domestic scale production to production via community energy cooperatives), as well as psychological processes which might explain spillover effects on participating in energy production (e.g. learning, self-identity, or social identity). Finally, I will briefly outline the potential for designing spillover in policy contexts taking into consideration the transformations that energy systems are currently undergoing.
