Incunabula in Croatia, with Special Emphasis on a Collection in the Library of Josip Juraj Strossmayer

Incunables in Croatia, with special regard to the collection in the Josip Juraj Strossmayer Library, provides a brief overview of the history of printing presented by Josip Badalić in 1952. with his catalog in the book Incunables in Croatia. Also, by bringing together the entire Slavic incunabulary, the research carried out by Mladen Bošnjak, provides an insight into many important names and places that contributed to the creation and preservation of Incunables in the territory of Yugoslavia, i.e. today's Republic of Croatia. Thanks to the work of the Glagolitic Priests, the Republic of Croatia now possesses a collection of incunables written in two scripts: Latin and Glagolitic. Many monasteries and monastic, orders like Franciscans or Dominicans, throughout the country have preserved these monuments and have enabled today’s incunabulists and other researchers to process, and present data about Europe in the 15th century. Josip Juraj Strossmayer–the bishop, patron, visionary, and above all, bibliophile -promoted his wish to raise the cultural level of today’s Republic of Croatia to the one in the rest of Europe with success. The personal library of Bishop Strossmayer, as well as the libraries of other bishops in Đakovo, posthumously became part of the Bishopric Library, which continues to preserve collected incunables and other historic rarities. The foundation of the Catholic Faculty of Theology in Đakovo in 2005. also led to the establishment of the Central Archbishopric and Faculty Library, which today preserves this valuable cultural and historical treasure in its holdings. It is important to note that the research of the fund of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the personal work of Tamara Runjak led to the publication of the first comprehensive catalog of Croatian incunables, which features interesting content, but also entices others to create new similar catalog publications.
