The influence of atmospheric pressure plasma on polymer wettability of colloidal gold synthesizeb by laser ablation in water

In this work the influence of atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) on polymer wettability was studied for two liquids: water (control sample) and colloidal gold. Colloidal solution of gold nanoparticles was synthesized by laser ablation of gold target immersed in water using Nd:YAG laser. Laser specifications are: pulse duration 5 ns, wavelength 1064 nm, output energy 290 mJ, repetition rate 5 Hz, fluence 100 mJ/cm2. In order to assess the surface hydrophilicity, contact angle was measured for pure water and colloidal solution of gold nanoparticles. The roughness of polymer surface was determined with atomic force microscope (AFM) and the surface topography was studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of colloidal solution was recorded to determine the average size and shape of nanoparticles used. This review is an introduction to the impregnation of nanoparticles into polymers which would give polymers antimicrobial properties. Figure 1. Schematics of APPJ treatment of polymer (PVC) and nanoparticles impregnation. Wide variety of polymers were treated with APPJ of helium in order to change the surface roughness. The polymers used in this work are biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET), high-density polyethylene (HD-PE), low-density polyethylene (LD-PE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
