Workplace design in clothing industry employing elite method

The space over and under the working surface of the sewing machine is of key importance for workplace design in garment industry, as that is the space where worker&#8217 ; s limbs, machines, workpieces and auxiliary devices are situated. In making the decision on spatial distribution of the above elements, special attention should be paid to the space that can be reached most easily, so called area or zone of normal reach. It is absolutely necessary, in designing workplaces in garment industry, to make provisions for all the cyclic technological procedures to be performed in the areas of normal reach. Space to be reached by extended arm is call maximum reach areas, and only some periodical technological procedures should be performed in them. Optimal position of the worker, machine and workpiece at workplace, position of auxiliary devices and apparatuses, as well as of phase transport elements can be defined by drawing the areas of normal and maximum reach of the workplace. A special type of presentation of movement areas, defined in relation to workplace dimensions and areas of minimum and maximum reach, is presented here. It is constructed on the basis of movement trajectories of a worker sitting by a sewing machine. Three central components of the workplace are workplace groundplan, minimum and maximum reach groundplan and trajectories of the movements. They are presented in the same drawing in an appropriate ratio for workplaces with transport stands, employing ELITE method. This kind of presentation offers an excellent overview of the mutual dependence of the elements in the worker&#8217 ; s area of activity, areas of normal and maximum reaches and the movements performed in them. The best shapes of normal and maximum reaches are defined employing the ELITE method. Experience of a number of authors has been consulted, and the authors have given a considerable contribution to constructing the areas described in frontal presentation of workplaces.
