Small Geographic Objects in the Focus of Research - Example of the Sikavci Islets in Detailed Maps

In the Nin-Ljubač Channel (Ninsk-Ljubački Kanal), along the coast of the island of Pag near village of Vlašici, there are two islets. On recent topographic maps they are marked as Veliki (0.15 square km) and Mali Sikavac (0.14 square km). The sailors of the nearby settlements called them by the common name in plural Ćićavci, or Ćikavci (Cikavci) (Large and Small) and on some older maps they appear as Scogli Zicavatz or Scogli Zicovac. The larger (Veli Sikavac / Ćićavac) on some topographic maps carries the name St. Paul. More recently, claims that a fortress on Veli Sikavac near the church remnants had been found, have been confirmed by contemporary archaeological research. As far as the oldest, clearer representations are known, are the maps from the 16th century with hardly readable labels (Tunor ?, Taua.z povina?). Namely, the remnants of the church, the rampart, the archival mention of the Venetian watchman in the 17th century, which the author mentioned earlier on several occasions, archaeological researches proved to be accurate. Also the relicts of (most probably) another older church, which lies under the small one (maybe named alone or both of them in some older maps by different names - St. Bastian, St. Barbara, St. Rocco, and finally St. Paul)) were also founded. Obviously, the strategic importance of the islet in the complex sea passage between the Zadar Channel and the Kvarnerić from one, and the Velebit Channel on the other hand, at least since the Byzantine times, was of great importance. Also, the author will, with the use of cartographic templates, present several variants of the possible name genesis of these islets.
