Freshwater crayfish in Croatia – an update
The last update on the freshwater crayfish species distribution in Croatian freshwaters was conducted in 2011. During 2014-2016, within the frame of Natura 2000 Integration Project, new distributional data were gather for Croatian crayfish populations. The research included different waterbodies across Croatia in 117 grid cells 10 x 10km (up to four waterbodies per grid cell). Altogether 450 sites were investigated, and presence of four native and two non-native species was confirmed. Also, presence of Procambarus fallax f. virginalis was recorded for the first time. Today, non-native crayfish comprise 43% of the total number of crayfish species in Croatia. Since 2003, they have occupied 30 out of 327 grid cells of Continental Croatia. At least in two localities, they have displaced native crayfish in a short period of time (1-3 years). In presentation more comparisons of recent and previous data on ICS and NICS in Croatia are discussed.
Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus, Austropotamobius pallipes, Austropotamobius torrentium, Pacifastacus leniusculus, Orconectes limosus, NIP
