The influence of liquid on the outcome of metalorganic cocrystal synthesis by liquid assisted grinding
Earlier, it has been observed that grinding the same reactants in the presence of different liquids can lead to different products [1]. Herein we present different outcomes of liquid assisted grinding (LAG) of dichlorobis(1, 10- phenantroline)cobalt(II) (CoCl2phen2) and 1, 4- diiodotetrafluorobenzene (14tfib). LAG of solid reactants with a catalytic amount of water gives the cocrystal product (CoCl2phen2)(14tfib) while LAG with a catalytic amount of methanol gives the salt of cocrystal solvate [CoCl(MeOH)phen2]Cl(14tfib)*(MeOH). Both solid products were also obtained by crystallization from the solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the dominant supramolecular bond in the cocrystal is I···Cl halogen bond between the halogen bond donor and the metal complex acceptor. On the other hand, the dominant supramolecular bonds in the salt are I···Cl halogen bonds between the halogen bond donor and chlorine anion as well as H-bonds between chlorine anion and oxygens in O–H groups of coordinated methanol and solvated methanol.
