Mapping the WWII: G.S.M.S./A.M.S. Topographic Map Series of the Balkans (1939-1945)
The paper analyzes the methods and process of compilation of the British /U.S. topographic maps of the Balkans created for the purpose of military operations during World War II. We present the challenges that cartographers of the British War Office and the U.S. Army Map Service had to face with to compile their edition of map of the Balkans. We discuss how they managed to homogenized different mathematic basement and geographical content from the numerous source maps, sort out complications of name-spellings, brought up to date the maps to made them reliable and which specific features some of the sheets had maintain within topographic map series of The Balkans
