Municipal solid waste generation mechanism: a case study for Croatia in period 2009-2013
Strategic planning in municipal solid waste management relies on prediction of waste generation. For the modeling purpose, the number of methods are available: correlation and regression analysis, time series analysis, group comparison, or methods that include complex interaction of variables. This research identifies the variables that correlate with waste generation in Croatia and proves the existence of geographically conditioned differences in found correlations. The data for research is based on five-year period (2009- 2013), and is including many statistical parameters. Strong correlations at country level are found for households and population, employees, annual income, roads, net wages, population per area ; then land owning households, tourist nights, towns. The counties in proximity of the Adriatic Sea have shown the above the average waste generation, caused in most part by the tourism and living in urban areas. Continuous increase in tourism activity will continue to increase the strain to collectors’ companies and the waste management system.
