Ethnic upbringing, developmental outcomes and interethnic relations among youth in a post- conflict community
Youth born in post-conflict ethnic divide face a number of obstacles in building relations with their out-group peers. A messages they often receive from their social environment is loaded with interethnic tensions, endorsing a strong social norm against interethnic contacts. In such a context, ethnic upbringing can be a challenging aspect of parenting, with important implications for youth’s developmental and social outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of ethnic upbringing with youth’s developmental outcomes and their intergroup relations. Additionally, we tested the mediating effects of self-system variables (ethnic identity and general self-efficacy). Participants (N = 558) were youth aged 13 to 18 years (M = 16.41), roughly split by gender (53% male) and ethnicity (49% majority Croats, 42% minority Serb, 9% other). The questionnaire measuring ethnic upbringing, general self-efficacy and ethnic identity as predictors and internalized and externalized developmental outcomes and measures of interethnic relations (active bystandership and tendency to discriminate) as criteria was administered. Results showed that ethnic upbringing had a significant effect on developmental outcomes and intergroup relations in both majority and minority group. More specifically, direct and indirect effects on developmental outcomes were small but indicating that ethnic upbringing can be both protective and risk factor for youth’s development. However, direct and indirect effects on indicators of interethnic relations were stronger and suggested ethnic upbringing as a risk factor for youth’s interethnic relations. The role of ethnic upbringing in building more stable and tolerant intergroup relations in post-conflict community will be discussed.
